The Adorable Baby Bathtubs We Never Used

bathBaby bathtubs are adorable. They are pretty and plastic and brightly colored and just waiting for a little baby to lay inside and splash, well, adorably. Of course we had a baby bathtub. In fact, I think we might have had two bathtubs at one point just for baby, but we didn’t up using either one. Not because it wasn’t functional and wonderful; it just wasn’t as functional and wonderful for us as something we already had – a full size bath tub.

Baby Baths in the Big Tub
There is a stigma initially about putting a baby in the big bathtub. They are so small and the tub is so big and cold. The baby can’t sit up, it’s not safe, it’s awkward, whatever. I agreed initially and so I diligently prepared baths in the little tub where I could barely fit my big babies and had a very hard time washing their hair. Water splashed everywhere and it was very hard to empty the tub. I also felt a bit nervous with the big tub sitting on the counter top where it could (in my paranoid maternal mind) just fall right off if the baby moved suddenly.

The Bath Seat
So in a flash of brilliance brought on by a lack of sleep, I took the mesh sling part out of the baby tub and put it into the big tub. A trickle of warm water was right at hand and all splashes were contained. The mesh reclining sling was designed to hold baby as he lay there in the warm bath and being on my knees hovering over the tub wasn’t any more uncomfortable than hovering over a wet counter. I would not have put the baby in the tub without some sort of seat, and I was lucky that my baby tub was the deluxe variety that had the special mesh seat I could just take out.

Since I’m such a fan of bathing babies in the big tub using the special mesh seats, I skipped the baby tub all together with my second and opted to use the seat in a few inches of water while his big brother bathed in the ‘deeper’ end of the tub. I was able to wash an infant and toddler together and my oldest got to help wash the baby’s feet and tummy – a very important job for a two-year-old. No mess, no fuss, and I’ve since learned that the special mesh slings you can buy alone are next to the baby tubs in the baby section. My mesh seat came from the baby bathtub, but the ones that are sold separately look even better than the one I had. The bath seats are less expensive than the tubs as well and retail around $15.
