Heavy Duty Parenting: The Double Jogger

doublejoggerNow that I have a 5-year-old and almost-3-year-old, there aren’t many baby relics left around our house. The only item that I have had for years and still use regularly (although not as regularly as I’d like) is the double jogger. It’s important to realize that I’m not a jogger. I use the stroller for walks to the park and for tooling around places that involve a bit too much walking for little boys. I’m hoping to start a regular walk in the evenings as well using the double jogging stroller. Mine is not a racing stroller. It doesn’t have any bells or whistles. In fact, it’s bottom of the barrel. But it’s pretty heavy-duty and it’s easily one of the best parenting investments I made.

Using a Double Jogger
If you’re thinking of getting a double jogger for your exercise routine, you’re a true warrior. The double jogger can hold fifty pounds on either side for a grand total of one hundred pounds on three wheels. If you think it’s hard to run pushing fifteen pounds in a single jogger, try running with sixty or seventy pounds. In discussions with other mothers, most of us realized early on that we wouldn’t be doing much running with the double jogger, but we all still love them.

Double jogging strollers are more durable and rugged than even the best traditional double stroller. They take up more room, certainly, but if you’re trying to walk along a gravel path or bounce along cobbled streets or even a bumpy sidewalk, you’ll be out of luck with most double strollers. In fact I tore my first double stroller up in less than nine months – and then I relied on the double jogger.

Considerations with a Double Jogger
The biggest complaint about a double jogging stroller is the size. This is a tremendous stroller and it doesn’t fold up very well in most cases. They do collapse, but will take up most of your trunk space in a good-sized trunk. This means they also don’t travel very well. Double jogging strollers work best when they are based at home or taken on short trips where there is plenty of room to pack. Double jogging strollers are available at baby retailers starting around $160.
