The Best Teething Ring: It’s Not What You Think!
I learned something very interesting when my oldest cut his first tooth. It seems that first tiny tooth is rather sharp. Sharp enough, in fact, that it might just pierce the soft and squishy plastic that makes up all of baby’s teething rings. I was instructed by countless baby books to remove the liquid-filled teething rings from my son’s toy collection once that tooth emerged.
Yes, you read that correctly. When you baby actually has a tooth, he can’t chew on his teething rings anymore. You can add all of those delightful squishy teething rings to the collection of toys you probably shouldn’t have bought in the first place.
So without the squishy teething toys, I was at a loss. What could my baby use as a teething ring? The answer – just about anything he wanted.
The best teething rings that we found were plastic beads strung together in a tight circle. The circle was too small to fit over baby’s head or be dangerous in any way, and as those molars especially started to move around in the gums, you’d find my toddler with the beads hanging out of the back of his mouth as he gnawed on the hard beads trying to get a nice bit of resistance.
The only difficulty with the hard plastic toys as teething rings is you can’t make them cold very easily. The water-filled teething rings that were forbidden could be dropped into the fridge to chill off which feels great on teething gums. When you go to find something hard and cold to chew on, I found only two good solutions for baby – frozen bagels and frozen waffles.
It sounds insane to feed a baby a frozen bagel half, but the cold bagel is hard enough to gnaw on, and as it warms up it flakes off into baby’s mouth as a nice mushy goo – perfect for a baby just learning to eat table foods. All in all, the frozen bagel and similarly the frozen waffle are the best teething rings out there – and they come in a variety of flavors.
