Color Wonder Markers to the Rescue! Kind of.

markerThe Crayola Color Wonder collection of art supplies has grown considerably, but it began with its current bestselling product, the Crayola Color Wonder Markers and corresponding coloring pads. The Color Wonder markers are unique in that they don’t actually color on anything but the Color Wonder coloring books and pages. Should the markers find their way into the hands of a toddler with a bare wall at hand, they won’t create any stray marks even if the marks are more intentional than accidental.

The Color Wonder markers are designed like all other Crayola markers – big and fat – making them easy to hold with plenty of coloring tip to make wide marks (when they make marks). The markers are easy to use so long as you have the proper coloring pages and they are substantially cleaner than other markers, even the washable variety. You won’t end up with marker on the floor, the sofa or any body parts at the end of the day. Unfortunately, this isn’t always a good thing.

Drawbacks to Color Wonder Markers
So long as your child is content to color in a small coloring book, the Color Wonder markers are terrific. However, if your toddler wants to color on anything else, he’s out of luck. This means you can’t use the markers on a regular coloring book, long sheets of butcher paper or newsprint or on any crafts. We’ve also had trouble finding plain paper to draw on rather than just coloring books at times. (My boys like to draw their own pictures, not just color preprinted ones.) Plain paper is available, it’s just a bit harder to find at times than the preprinted variety.

The biggest problem most parents have with the Color Wonder system of markers and notepads is the cost. While a pad of paper and a box of Crayola washable markers can be had for less than $3 or $4, the Color Wonder system costs much closer to $10 – for a box of markers and small coloring book. Naturally the technology of the markers costs a bit more, but more twice the price? Really? At that price, you have to treat them like small treasures, which isn’t often the case with art supplies in any home with toddlers. But, for a car trip or a trip to Grandma’s condo with its white carpet, the Color Wonder markers are very worth it for your peace of mind.
