Maya Wrap: A Baby Sling

Maya Wrap
I’ll admit I was more of a front pouch mama than a sling mama, but I have stared in blatant fascination at the mothers who wear infant slings so easily and well. The slings have a ton of support from any number of experienced mothers and are lightweight and comfortable to wear as well.
The Maya Wrap
The Maya Wrap is a piece of beautiful fabric that comes with a large ring. To wear the wrap, you thread parts of it through the ring and position it over your shoulder so that the pouch is resting in the front, slightly to your side. Position the baby into the pouch and be sure her little face isn’t squashed up against you or the wrap and you’re in business. As she grows, you can move her out of a cradle hold into a front kangaroo style hold and then finally onto your hip when she’s a toddler. The wrap is versatile and a huge favorite for breastfeeding moms.
The Maya Wrap and Breastfeeding
I heard about the Maya Wrap first in relation to how easily it concealed breastfeeding – any time, any place. Because the baby is wrapped in essentially a large scarf, she is already hidden from view. Simply open your blouse and to give your baby access and she’s held in the right position for as long as she likes and you can throw the tail of the long wrap up over the nursing baby to keep everything concealed and private. Baby can also sleep in the wrap easily without being disturbed.
The Learning Curve of the Maya Wrap
There is a rather steep learning curve to the Maya Wrap. A DVD is sent along with the wrap when you purchase a new product and it shows you how to wear the wrap and how to position it correctly. Judging from the comments of others, this can take more than a bit of practice initially and many grow frustrated in the process. Another common complaint is that the wrap slips in the ring and becomes uncomfortable positioned.
Baby Wearing
Thus far no baby wearing seems to be perfect, but the Maya wrap has plenty going for it. Unlike most carriers, it’s stylish and actually quite beautiful. The fabric washes easily and can be used for years. It does take some time to learn how to use the wrap correctly, but once you do, you’re free and comfortable with you baby close to your heart for years to come.
Maya Wraps start around $66.

It is great to hear you feel the learning curve with Maya wrap is worth it. I think it is a great wrap and definitely worth the effort. I just read about a mom whose son is a year and when he fusses and she grabs her sling he immediately starts to calm down because of the awareness of the comfort he will get. Isn’t that cool?!
