sleepingKnown around our house as the Sleep Bible, Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child is by far the most useful baby resource out there for parents of children not naturally prone to solid sleeping conditions. Every parent knows of a baby that sleeps easily and well starting Day 1. But few of those babies continue to sleep so easily as they get older and more aware. Weissbluth doesn’t offer a single strategy for helping your baby sleep, he offers research.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child is a book of science interfused with his professional opinion. The first sections of the book discuss the science of sleep and the implications of poor sleep – not just in babies, but in teens and adults as well. Once the scare tactics are complete, he launches into the sleep development and cycles at various ages.

Weissbluth takes parents through every stage of their child’s development. He explains the natural sleep rhythms of the age and strategies to use to help your child get the best sleep possible. For example, babies enter a light state of sleep while older babies and toddlers immediately enter a deep sleep when they start to slumber. Helping babies sleep more soundly as you tip-toe out of the room simply involves soothing them for more than twenty minutes to get past the early REM sleep.

Using Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child
The Sleep Bible earned its nickname with good reason. There is a section on every age of child from newborn to teenager discussing how much sleep the child needs at his age, the averages in society and the impact of that sleep on behavior and development. In each section, there are detailed suggestions that range in comfort level for parents. Weissbluth does advocate a bit of crying if it helps the baby fall asleep soundly, but if you’re not comfortable with that method, there are countless others to try as well.

The sheer volume of information research, studies cited and suggestions with background make this a resource you can both flip through in an emergency and read at your leisure. And unlike other baby books, this one you can keep in your home library ready to tackle night terrors, bed wetting and even sleep walking as your children age. Even with the suggestion of aggressive methods including crying, the book takes a middle path offering a wide range of suggestions suitable for all parents.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child retails starting around $17.
