Playtex Drop-In System
One of the hardest things to register for as an expecting mom is the right kind of bottle for a bottle-fed baby. There are so many different kinds of bottles with different characteristics the selection can be overwhelming. I was lucky enough to witness the Playtex Drop-In bottles in action before registering and realized they were a good fit for our family. Two babies later, I’m still sold on the Playtex Drop-Ins.
Playtex Drop-In System
The Playtex Drop-In system contains a few different variations on the same sort of bottle. In the system, you have a hollow tube, a ring and a nipple for the bottle. Simply insert a sterile drop-in and fill with milk or formula. Twist on the ring and nipple and your bottle is ready. The drop-in is a thin plastic bag that contracts as baby drinks ensuring less air is in her stomach after eating and also closely simulating the act of breastfeeding.
The Drop-In System is easy to clean as well. When your baby is done feeding, simply remove the plastic drop in and throw it away. All that is left to clean is the nipple, ring and outer bottle, much easier to scrub and sterilize than full bottles that require bottle brushes to reach.
Benefits of the Playtex Drop-In System
If used correctly, the drop-ins really can reduce a lot of the gas that your baby might have after a typical feeding. Simply remove as much air as possible by squeezing the drop-in from the bottom to remove extra air and feed to baby. No air in the bottle means a more comfortable feed and less colicky behavior. The shape of the nipples is more natural for baby as well with a wide base. When baby sucks on the nipple, it fits her mouth much like a breast making a natural transition between breast and bottle easier to handle.
Drawbacks of the Playtex Drop-In System
Unlike hard bottles, the soft drop-ins of the Playtex system can make you hesitate to simply toss the bottle into a diaper bag. Always check to be sure the drop-in is placed in the bottle correctly to prevent serious leaks. Relying on a steady supply of drop-in liners can be a challenge as well. Packing for a weekend trip requires more than a bottle brush and dish detergent, you have to pack the drop-ins in addition to the detergent and the rest of the bottles. Running out in the middle of the night is worrisome, but having an emergency pack of drop-ins is certainly advisable for just this sort of emergency.

I like the fact that there are less air bubbles for our son but it is more expensive. In the end it is likely worth it but when you are trying to save every penny it is hard to spend the extra money.
