Baby Papasan Infant Seat

After my first, I’d learned plenty and had a houseful of baby gear. Taking that into consideration, I wasn’t interested in buying any more than I had to when the second baby boy came along. But having browsed the baby stores during pregnancy, I was interested in a few things. The first was one of the BabyBjorn carriers to replace the inexpensive and far less comfortable carrier I’d used with my first. The second was the Baby Papasan infant seat.

The first infant seat we had was of the standard variety. Baby sits in the bouncy seat and is entertained by things to kick and see while strapped in. The problem with us and baby seats was that faced by parents of large babies everywhere. When I wanted to use the bouncy seat the most, my baby almost collapsed it under his girth. So I was thrilled when I saw the Baby Papasan with its sturdy, non spring-loaded action.

Baby Papasan Infant Seat
The first appeal of the Baby Papasan Infant Seat is how attractive it is. Unlike the bright, often garish colors of other baby gear, the Papasan is muted in pale green and cream. You have gender specific options as well, but they are also pastel. The seat looks like a well supported bowl that’s been tipped up a bit on the edge. It is lined in snuggly fleece and has a harness to keep baby in the right place. A bottom control lets you vibrations and there are lullabies as well with volume control.

The fleecy fabric and a micro suede pillow create a sort of nest for baby, and we often used the Baby Papasan for naps when that second baby boy was very young. He was able to sleep at a sight recline in a warm, cozy, safe environment. He was far more comfortable than being flat on his back and the sturdy support made it easy for him to stay in the seat even as he grew larger. The seat supports up to twenty-five pounds without collapsing or springing about.

Drawbacks to the Baby Papasan
The primary drawback to the Baby Papasan is that it is not as exciting for older babies as some other seat options. There is a mirror and small dangling animal to look at, but that’s not as much fun as the play things attached to other seats. The bar that holds the mirror and such is removable and you can swing it out of the way to remove the baby, but simply not very engaging or play-worthy.

The warm softness of the seat is also difficult in the warmer months. When seated in the chair inside, the air had to be on or my little one got a bit too warm at times. It is perfect, however, if baby’s in a t-shirt and socks, but perhaps not covered with a blanket.

The Baby Papasan Infant Seat is sold in most baby retailers for about $55.

  1. We bought one and loved it. For me it was a life saver to be able to put down my daughter where I could still see her so I had a hand free to do something around the house!
