Kiddopotamus: SwaddleMe
With a colicky first born, it took me only a matter of days to realize how critical swaddling was going to be for him and me. The only trouble was that there weren’t any baby blankets large enough to swaddle him well, and more often than not I’d find him with his feet kicked out of the swaddle making the wrapped blankets a safety hazard as well as simply not very effective. Enter the SwaddleMe.
Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe
Easily one of my favorite baby items, the SwaddleMe is now one of my favorite baby shower gifts. It’s not expensive, but it takes the guess work out of swaddling your baby. It’s safe, can be light weight or warm, and takes almost no time to position correctly on your baby.
Using the Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe
The SwaddleMe is a large swatch of fabric with a pocket built in for baby’s legs and three Velcro tabs to hold the swaddle in place. To use the SwaddleMe, lay the fabric flat on the floor, couch or bed. Then lay your baby on the Swaddle Me with his shoulders just under the contoured areas at the top of the fabric. Tuck his feet securely inside the pouch in the center of the swaddle.
Lift one side up and over to “catch” the top of your baby’s shoulder. Pull it snugly and fasten it to the interior Velco flap. Then pull the remaining flap tightly and wrap around your baby. Fasten it using the two large Velcro tabs. You baby is now wrapped safely with his little feet firmly ensconced in fabric and his arms held in with Velcro fasteners so that he can’t break fee. Baby sleeps more comfortable on his back and you get a few more hours of sleep as well.
The Benefits of the SwaddleMe
The concept of the SwaddleMe was the first of its kind to hit the major baby retailers. It’s proved to be hugely popular with parents for good reason. In lightweight stretch cotton and a heavier fleece you can use the swaddle in any season comfortable. Best of all, the SwaddleMe comes in sizes. The Preemie size fits babies as small as three pounds and is frequently found in hospital NICUs. The Small size fits the average sized newborn, but best of all there is a Large size perfect for babies larger than average, such as mine who were too long for the typical baby blankets.
Downside of the SwaddleMe
For some parents, the collection of folds, pockets and Velco patches can be confusing. Learning to use the product does take a few minutes, but once you know what you’re doing, it’s simple to use over and over again.
Buying SwaddleMe
The SwaddleMe is available through many stores listed on the Kiddopotamus website. You can find a select assortment of SwaddleMe options in major retailers both offline and on that sell infant gear. An almost complete range of SwaddleMe options are usually available at specialty baby retailers such as BabysRUs. The SwaddleMe retails close to $10.

I never knew what these were called but I LOVE them. When our son was born we ended up with a handful from family and I was amazed after getting a chance to try it out. I laughed with my mom trying to figure out how they got around without them when I was a baby.
We give it a thumbs up! If nothing else put it on your registry to give it a shot to see if you like them.
