BabyBjorn Baby Carrier– A Life and Back Saver
With the birth of my first son, I made the same mistake many parents do. I bought the inexpensive baby carrier. It got plenty of use as my oldest turned out to be colicky and couldn’t touch the floor, crib, or bouncy seat without screaming, but after the first few weeks I noticed that the carrier was uncomfortable for both of us. When my second was due to be born, I made the jump the more expensive BabyBjorn Baby Carrier, and like many other parents, was well-rewarded.
Life with a Baby Carrier
If you subscribe to attachment parenting, you’re already planning to wear your baby quite often. But even if you’ve never heard of William Sears, the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier can be a huge help with an infant.
Wearing a front pack allows you to place your infant over eight pounds and 21 inches close to your chest in a perfectly ergonomic position while leaving your arms free to do other things. The position of the infant is directly over your heart so that you can kiss the top of her head at will – ensuring she is comfortable and in a perfect nest.
The difference between the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier and other brands is that the soft mesh fabric is cut perfectly to hold your baby safely in an ergonomic position ideal for his spine, legs and hips. The multiple adjustment straps allow you to find the perfect height for your baby and then to pull the sides of her body in tightly as well as giving additional support to the head region.
The baby carrier is also designed to be ergonomic for the wearer. Rather than strapping across the back much like a bra as most carriers do, the BabyBjorn carrier straps are wide, cross in the back and adjust individually to help you position the weight of the baby perfectly to support your baby. This gives you a natural support across your back without pulling you forward the way the other carriers can. The BabyBjorn carrier feels a lot like a natural extension of your baby on your body – much like you felt when you were pregnant, but at your chest level.
Variations of the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier
After 35 years working with baby carriers, BabyBjorn has branched out very little in their line of carriers. There are different colors in the Spirit line. There are pouches on the carriers in the Air series along with an even lighter-weight fabric that allows for greater air circulation. The Active carrier is a heavy-duty carrier that has additional lumbar support for longer treks. The Synergy carrier is the Active carrier in the same lightweight fabrics as the Air series.
Easily the most popular, however, is the original carrier. Basic in black, the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Original will run you about $80. The other baby carriers by BabyBjorn can cost as much as $160.
Concerns about BabyBjorn Baby Carriers
The biggest problem parents might face with the baby carrier is leaving their child in the carrier for too long. Babies need time to stretch and practice their developing skills. Be sure to give your child time on his stomach to grow stronger neck and back muscles. While it is okay for young babies to sleep in the carrier during naps, as your child develops a more regular naptime, be sure to respect regular naps by removing her from the carrier to nap in a more regular setting.
Be sure to read instructions as well to ensure your baby is seated in the carrier properly based on her size and neck strength. Babies who can not hold their heads steady should not face out in the carrier. When they do face out, be sure you fold the top of the carrier down properly, as it is often done improperly.

Before I was a parent I told myself ‘geez – just carry your baby’. I didn’t realize how hard it was to get anything DONE while holding the baby. While holding Baby is amazing sometimes you just need a free hand to pick up clothes, or to make dinner etc. I actually picked up a used Bjorn and LOVED IT. It was amazing how much more “normal” I could feel being able to be close to our child and to still get something done.
We have a baby carrier and love it. We do not actually have the Baby Bjorn so not sure which is better. I know the Bjorn had better reviews but I could not beat the price I got.
As a Dad with a 6 month old – I HIGHLY recommend it!
Looks like a great product. I just might have to buy one.
