Dreft. The Baby Laundry Detergent

Dreft. The Baby Laundry Detergent
There are so many random things for new mothers to learn about during pregnancy. One of the seemingly most random is the special detergents new mommies should be using to wash anything that’s going to touch baby’s sensitive skin. Of course it’s not meaningless or trivial once you know the rationale behind the special baby detergents, but the first time I realized regular Tide wasn’t going to cut it for the little one I was preparing for, I was a bit flabbergasted.
Dreft
There are now a few selections you can use for washing baby’s clothes, but the pink box of Dreft was the staple then and now. The premise behind the baby laundry detergent is that babies can be born with such amazingly sensitive skin that you don’t want to cause irritation or rashes by using a detergent full of chemicals such as fragrances and fabric softeners. Dreft is pure soap – a gentle soap – designed to be ultra sensitive for baby’s skin. Dreft is available as a powder or liquid for top loading machines and as a special liquid for the front loaders.
Washing Baby’s Clothing
Before your baby arrives, you’re supposed to prewash anything that might touch her sensitive skin with Dreft to remove any traces of chemicals or stiffness. You should not combine the Dreft with fabric softeners as that adds back in chemicals. You want the clothing to be as pure and clean as possible without being harsh. In addition to your baby’s clothing, you should also wash anything that the baby might come into contact with in the Dreft as well. That can include her blankets, her sheets, your sheets, your clothing and any fabric toys.
It’s a lot of laundry, but then that’s life with a child. Fortunately, Dreft isn’t very expensive, it’s in line with price of other laundry detergents and it has a pleasant, clean smell. Prewash and fold as much as you can before baby comes and then continue to use the Dreft until you’re sure your baby doesn’t have an allergy or sensitivity to chemicals in detergent. In my household, we opted for a giant box of Dreft initially and used it up. By the time it was finished, I would run a load of laundry in a regular detergent to check for reactions. If we were clear, I considered the time for Dreft to be up, but I could have easily continued using it for quite some time.
The Best Thing about Dreft
Easily one of the best things about Dreft is the distinctive smell of the light soap. Baby clothes washed in Dreft, even if they are at a friend’s house, will bring back that sensory awareness of your own infant, even years after you stopped using the baby detergent. Dreft can be found in grocery and baby stores starting around $12.
